The Gautrain runs directly from OR Tambo International Airport to Sandton. You do not change trains: board the service for Sandton, remain aboard at Rhodesfield and Marlboro, and leave at Sandton.

The one-way fare effective 1 September 2026 is R228 per person. A contactless bank card is the simplest payment method for many visitors. The linked timetable allows 14 minutes from OR Tambo to Sandton, but that does not include reaching the airport station or travelling from Sandton Station to your accommodation.

Fare and ticket choices

Gautrain’s fare sheet effective 1 September 2026 sets the OR Tambo–Sandton fare at R228 one way, in both peak and off-peak periods.

There are two practical ways to pay:

  • Contactless bank card: tap the card at the OR Tambo fare gate and tap the same card when leaving at Sandton. Gautrain says foreign contactless cards are accepted.
  • Gautrain Card: buy a card for R21 and load enough value for the journey. The card and one R228 trip cost R249 in total, before any onward bus fare.

Gautrain also lists an OR Tambo–Sandton return product at R456. Train products, including return products, can be loaded only onto a Gautrain Card. With a contactless bank card, two pay-as-you-go journeys at the published airport fare also total R456.

Each passenger needs a separate card. Remove the card from your wallet before tapping, and use that same card at entry and exit. Gautrain’s contactless-payment guidance warns that tapping a wallet can cause card clash, while entering and exiting with different contactless cards attracts penalty charges.

For a straightforward airport trip, a contactless card avoids buying a separate Gautrain Card or leaving unused value on it.

Finding the train at OR Tambo

Follow the airport signs for Gautrain after arrivals. The station is within the airport complex, not at a separate roadside terminal. Gautrain says the elevated station is integrated with the Central Terminal Building and its concourse connects directly to the departures level one level below.

At the station:

  1. Tap your contactless bank card, or use a loaded Gautrain Card.
  2. Follow signs for the service to Sandton.
  3. Board and keep your luggage with you.
  4. Stay aboard at Rhodesfield and Marlboro.
  5. Tap the same card to exit at Sandton.

The detailed timetable shows typical trips such as 05:30–05:44, giving a scheduled journey of 14 minutes. Allow additional time for the walk from arrivals, waiting for a train and the final hotel transfer.

First and last trains

Gautrain’s live schedule page lists OR Tambo Station as open from 05:12 to 21:14. Its linked detailed timetable lists these OR Tambo departures:

  • Weekdays: first train at 05:30; last at 20:30
  • Weekends and public holidays: first train at 05:27; last at 20:30

The detailed tables are labelled 2025, although Gautrain still links to them from its schedule page. Check the official app or trip planner on the day of travel; the station closing time is not the last-train departure time.

For an evening arrival, include time for immigration, baggage collection and the walk through the terminal. If reaching the platform before the last departure looks doubtful, arrange a road transfer instead.

Getting from Sandton Station to your hotel

Sandton Station is beneath Rivonia Road. Its pedestrian entrance is at Rivonia Road and West Street, and its vehicle parkade entrance is on West Street, according to the operator’s Sandton Station information.

The right final transfer depends on the hotel’s exact entrance, not simply whether its address includes “Sandton.”

Walk

Walking may be workable for accommodation immediately around West Street, Rivonia Road, Nelson Mandela Square or Sandton City when the distance and luggage are manageable. Check the hotel entrance before setting out: shopping complexes and large properties can make a short map distance less direct than it appears.

Hotel pickup, taxi or ride-hailing

A door-to-door transfer is generally simpler with luggage if the accommodation is in Morningside, Benmore, Rivonia, Bryanston, Fourways or elsewhere beyond the central station area. Confirm the pickup point with the hotel or driver; do not assume it will be at the pedestrian entrance.

This option is also more practical after dark, when no suitable bus is running or when several travellers can share one vehicle fare.

Gautrain bus

Gautrain buses from Sandton Station are fixed commuter routes rather than hotel shuttles. Listed routes include S2 Gallo Manor, S3 Rivonia, S4 Randburg and S5 Fourways. Check the map and stop list on the operator’s bus-route download page before deciding that a bus serves your accommodation.

To receive the discounted rail-user fare after arriving by train, board within one hour and tap the same contactless bank card or Gautrain Card. The current fare sheet lists rail-user bus fares of R13 in peak periods and R6 off-peak. Cash is not accepted, and you do not tap when leaving the bus. The operator explains these rules in its bus guide.

Do not assume a bus will meet every train. The published S2, S3 Rivonia and S5 route sheets show no weekend or public-holiday service, and road traffic can delay buses on operating days.

Is the Gautrain the right choice?

The Gautrain is a strong fit when your flight reaches the terminal during operating hours and your destination is near Sandton Station or has a straightforward onward pickup. The rail leg is direct and avoids making the whole airport–Sandton journey by road.

A pre-arranged road transfer may make more sense when the flight arrives too late for a comfortable connection, the group can share the vehicle cost, luggage is substantial or the accommodation is well beyond central Sandton. Compare the train plus the final transfer with a single door-to-door journey—not the train fare with a car fare in isolation.
